Immunisation Awareness: Why Vaccination Matters for Ghanaian Families

NR Meds • 24 August 2026

Preventing illness is an important part of maintaining a healthy family and community. One of the most effective tools available for preventing certain infectious diseases is immunisation. Vaccines help the body develop protection against specific diseases before a person is exposed to them. This can reduce the risk of serious illness and help protect people who may be more vulnerable to infection.

In Ghana, the Ghana Health Service has a national childhood immunisation schedule covering vaccinations from birth through childhood. Vaccination is available at public health facilities, and parents or caregivers who have missed a scheduled dose are advised to speak with a health worker about catch-up vaccination.

Why keeping vaccinations up to date matters

It can be easy for busy parents and caregivers to forget an appointment or assume that missing one dose means there is no point continuing.

That is not a reason to give up. If a child has missed a vaccination, the best step is to speak with a qualified health worker. They can advise on the appropriate catch-up schedule based on the child's vaccination history.

Immunisation also goes beyond childhood. WHO's current routine immunisation recommendations cover children, adolescents and adults, with recommendations varying according to age, risk and country context.

Protecting more than one person

Vaccination can help protect individuals while also contributing to healthier communities. High vaccination coverage makes it harder for vaccine-preventable diseases to spread and helps reduce the burden on families and healthcare services. However, misinformation can create confusion and reduce confidence in vaccination. Ghana's recent immunisation efforts have included community education and initiatives aimed at addressing misinformation and improving vaccine confidence.

When you hear a claim about a vaccine, do not rely on rumours or social media posts alone. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional and use trusted health information.

At NR Meds, we believe prevention starts with knowledge.

This Immunisation Awareness Month, check your family's vaccination records, ask questions and make sure you understand the recommended schedule.
